Jorge Drexler is a throwback to the days when eminent Latin American songwriters were also diplomats, dentists and journalists. Before winning the 2005 Oscar for his “Motorcycle Diaries” theme song “Al Otro Lado Del Río,” he was a doctor with a thriving practice. These days the Uruguayan singer/songwriter is revered across the Spanish-speaking world for his gracefully crafted tunes and penetrating lyrics.
His new album “Salvavidas De Hielo” (Ice Life Vest) features his stripped-down production, but he’s touring with a highly flexible band that can explore his entire songbook. Laced with electronic textures, it’s a mostly acoustic quintet with musicians who are also accomplished backup singers. The tour lands at San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom Feb. 15.
